Proto Labs showcasing insert molding for medical equipment
Proto Labs showcased its newest rapid manufacturing service—insert molding—at MD&M West 2017. Insert molding is the process of overmolding thermoplastic materials around a preformed component that will create a finished part.
The preformed components (inserts) are usually metal parts that are used to reinforce the mechanical properties of the plastic parts. The metal inserts form the part when placed into the mold.
The insert molding will incorporate multiple materials to add strength and durability to parts. it can produce 25 to more than 10,000 insert-molded parts in 15 days or less.
Insert molding produces a number of different components, including electronic parts, medical equipment, housing, knobs, handles and dials. It is also used in several different industries, such as medical, automotive and consumer products.
