Convatec launches new hydrophilic option for self-catheterization

Convatec logoConvatec is adding to its Cure family of self-administered urinary catheters, with a new model launching in the U.S. and Canada this month.

The Cure Aqua is a ready-to-use intermittent catheter featuring a hydrophilic coating that the company says lowers friction and requires no activation steps. With opaque and easy-open packaging for greater privacy, it includes a no-touch handling sleeve to lower infection risks.

“At Convatec, we believe the most impactful innovation starts with understanding the experiences of the people we serve and ensuring we provide meaningful choice to reflect individual needs and lifestyles,” said Mark Jassey, president of the company’s continence care and home services business.

Like the other offerings in its Cure portfolio, the Cure Aqua carries a blue control stripe for correct tip orientation during use, and is constructed without DEHP/DINP, BPA or natural rubber latex. Convatec said it plans to roll out Cure Aqua — available in female, male and pediatric options — to additional markets outside North America in the future.

Meanwhile, under its separate GentleCath intermittent product line, Convatec said it is preparing to launch the compact GentleCath Air Pocket and GentleCath Air Set in Europe by the end of this year. The current GentleCath Air hydrophilic offerings for men and women have lubricating coatings activated with an equipped sachet of water.

For the first half of this year, Convatec reported that its continence care group delivered $277 million in revenue, up 6.6% compared to the same six-month period the year prior. The company said that sales of its GentleCath Air for women have more than doubled, claiming more than 10% of the U.S. market, while its hydrophilic catheters have grown faster than non-hydrophilic.
