Terumo Neuro (formerly MicroVention) has launched the Sofia Flow 88 large-bore aspiration catheter, designed for supporting clot removal in stroke procedures.

The catheter features a 0.088 in. inner diameter and incorporates design enhancements aimed at improving procedural control, vessel safety, and compatibility across aspiration techniques.

The Flow 88 builds on more than a decade of global clinical use of the Sofia catheter family, which has supported over 500,000 procedures in 170 countries, according to the company. Key updates in the new design include optimized flexibility for smoother navigation through challenging anatomy, reinforced support for stability during long procedures, and a compliant, atraumatic tip designed to better conform to clot morphology. The Sofia 88 aspiration catheter is also made with a nitinol braid and coil reinforcement to ensure it maintains lumen integrity.

“As we introduce the Sofia Flow 88 Neurovascular Aspiration Catheter, we are building on a decade of performance that physicians around the world have come to trust,” said Carsten Schroeder, president and CEO of Terumo Neuro. “This launch is a reflection of our continued investment in neurovascular innovation, made possible through direct collaboration with physicians and our strong R&D and manufacturing capabilities. Together, we are delivering meaningful advancements in stroke care designed to improve outcomes for patients worldwide.”

Terumo Neuro designed the Flow 88 catheters to integrate into existing aspiration strategies. It is compatible with Terumo’s Sofia Plus 6F catheter. Clinical evidence from the SOFAST registry and the SESAME trial, evaluating the Sofia Plus 6F, demonstrated promising results in procedural speed, efficacy, safety, and patient outcomes.

The new device complements Terumo’s broader neurovascular portfolio, which includes the Eric retrieval device, Bobby balloon guide catheter, Wedge and Headway microcatheters, and Traxcess guidewires.
