7. Penumbra: Lightning 12 clot-retrieval system
Penumbra’s Indigo Lightning 12 aspiration catheter system won expanded FDA clearance in November 2020. The expanded clearance covers the removal of fresh, soft emboli and thrombi from vessels of the peripheral arterial and venous systems and for pulmonary embolism treatment.
Lightning 12 combines the company’s Indigo system CAT 12 aspiration catheter with Lightning Intelligent aspiration to allow physicians to focus on optimizing thrombus removal using the system’s clot-detection mechanism.
The CAT 12 catheter in the system is a large-lumen aspiration catheter that uses laser-cut, hypotube-based catheter engineering to improve delivery and torque within the body.
Lightning has dual pressure sensors for real-time flow monitoring, a microprocessor with a thrombus-removal algorithm, automatic valve control and intraprocedural audio-visual cues.
The Indigo Cat 12 multi-pitched hypotube catheter is made of stainless steel. It has a large lumen size and circumferential sweep to remove the blood clot, and 1:1 torque transfer and advanced deliverability with separator technology.
